Brief

What the Client Wanted

The school needed its existing deck replaced before students returned from holidays. The old decking was worn and needed a full strip and rebuild with new hardwood boards, timber balustrades, and a quality finish that could handle daily foot traffic from staff and students.

Challenge

Considerations

The job had a fixed deadline. It had to be completed over the school holiday break so there was no disruption to the school term. The deck runs along multiple sides of the building with corners, direction changes, and transitions between brick and corrugated cladding that all needed clean detailing.

  • Working to a tight holiday window with no room to overrun
  • Stripping the old deck and rebuilding on existing structure
  • Cutting detailed board patterns at direction changes and corners
  • Installing new timber balustrades to comply with safety requirements
  • Finishing on a building that gets heavy daily use
Solution

How We Built It

We stripped the old decking back and rebuilt with new hardwood across the full area. The boards were laid with a herringbone join where the deck changes direction at corners, keeping the pattern clean and consistent around the building.

New hardwood balustrades were built and installed along the open edges of the deck for safety. Each section was built with evenly spaced vertical balusters and a solid top rail, all in matching hardwood.

The deck was oiled on completion to protect the timber and bring out the grain. The finish is consistent across every section, from the covered walkway areas through to the open corners.

Result

The Finished Build

The completed deck was handed over before students returned. New hardwood across every section, clean herringbone joins at the corners, matching timber balustrades, and a consistent oil finish throughout.

The detail on the board joins and balustrade work is what sets this one apart. A straightforward scope on paper, but the quality of the carpentry shows in the finished product.
