The client wanted a large outdoor living area on their rural Kurrajong property. The brief was a full-sized hardwood deck with a covered pergola overhead and stairs providing access from multiple sides. A space big enough to host and use year-round, built to handle the weather and the wear of a rural property.

An 80sqm deck and pergola is a significant outdoor build. The pergola needed steel posts and a gabled roof structure to cover the full deck area, and the stairs had to wrap around the corner to give ground-level access from two directions.
We built the pergola first, setting steel posts and framing the gabled roof structure to cover the full 80sqm footprint. The deck was then built underneath with Merbau hardwood, with the subframe spaced for a solid, level surface across the full area.
The wrap around stairs were custom built at the corner of the deck, stepping down on two sides to meet the ground. Every board was cut to follow the angle of the corner, with consistent spacing and clean mitred edges where the two runs meet.
A ceiling fan was installed under the pergola roof for airflow in warmer months, and the Merbau was oiled on completion to bring out the natural grain and protect the timber from weather and UV.

The completed deck and pergola give the homeowners a serious outdoor living area on their Kurrajong property. The Merbau has a rich, warm finish that contrasts well against the steel posts and light-coloured gabled roof above.
The wrap around stairs add a clean detail to the corner and give easy access from the yard on both sides. A practical outdoor space built in a hardwood that will hold up for years with regular maintenance.
